President Donald Trump will undergo a routine medical examination during a visit to Maryland, the White House announced on Oct. 8.
In a statement, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the president would visit Walter Reed Medical Center on the morning of Oct. 10 “for a planned meeting and remarks with the troops.”
“While there,” she said, “President Trump will stop by for his routine yearly checkup.”
This will be Trump’s second examination since taking office. He was also evaluated at the world-class military hospital based in Bethesda, Maryland, in April.
“Overall, I felt I was in very good shape,” Trump told reporters on Air Force One after that examination.
Trump’s health has drawn increased scrutiny after pictures emerged earlier this year showing the president with swollen ankles and bruising on his hands.
The White House announced in July that these symptoms were a result of chronic venous insufficiency, a fairly common health condition among older adults.
A memorandum released by the White House on July 17 confirmed the diagnosis, noting that Trump had reported “mild swelling in his lower legs,” which was later evaluated by the White House Medical Unit.
In recent years, information about U.S. presidents’ health has drawn more attention. That’s in part because they are entering office older than ever before.
Trump, 79, was born in 1946, sharing a birth year with Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. President Joe Biden, who held the office before Trump’s second term, was born in 1942.
President Barack Obama, who was born in 1961, is the youngest living president. He was the first, and so far only, president who was born after the 1940s.
Before Trump took office in 2016, President Ronald Reagan was the oldest person ever elected to the office, having been elected at age 69, a record broken by Trump.
That record was subsequently broken by Biden, whose four-year term in office was marked by increasing concerns about his fitness to serve a second term.
Following a debate in June 2024 between Biden and Trump, these concerns escalated, and Biden ultimately voluntarily dropped out of the presidential race and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for the Democratic nomination.
Biden currently holds the record as the oldest president to occupy the Oval Office at 82 years, 61 days. If Trump finishes his second term, he’ll break that record.
Leavitt said Trump is “considering” a trip to the Middle East after his visit to Walter Reed. That trip would come after the White House announced that a peace deal had been reached between Israel and terrorist group Hamas.
