A federal Liberal Party MP has expressed disappointment after his party’s state leader refused to endorse a vote to drop net zero, and cut back on Indigenous Welcome to Ceremonies.

The Member for Canning Andrew Hastie had put forward the motion at the Western Australia (WA) Liberal State Council.

“This motion—moved and supported by my division of Canning—reflects a growing concern from mainstream Australians about our expensive energy bills, unreliable supply, and the erosion of our national sovereignty,” Hastie wrote in the email obtained by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

“I was therefore disappointed to see WA Liberal Leader Basil Zempilas publicly dismiss those concerns.”

The motion dealt with three contentious issues.

The first was to drop support for Australia to achieve net zero by 2050, the second was to reduce the amount of Indigenous Welcome to Country and Acknowledgements conducted in public settings, and the third was for the prime minister to carry out official engagements in front of the official Australian flag, instead of the current three.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese conducts press conferences in front of the Australian, Aboriginal, and Torres Strait Islander flags.

However, WA Opposition Leader Basil Zempilas said in response that while he supported the right of party members to vote, he would not adopt the position, noting the parliamentary Liberal Party respected the status quo.

“We are very comfortable standing in front of the Aboriginal flag,” Zempilas told reporters.

“We are very comfortable with the Welcome to Country, and we support the status quo on the net zero targets.”

The Epoch Times contacted the offices of Hastie and Zempilas for additional comment.
