The Haitian Parliament late on Saturday approved a new government headed by recently appointed Prime Minister Gary Conille, according to reports.
Approval of the new Cabinet ended several months of deadlock between President Michel Martelly and the legislative body. According to Haiti Libre, the new Cabinet will be sworn in on Tuesday.
“Now that I have my prime minister and my team, we’re going to work,” Martelly told Haiti Libre. “The prime minister is prepared to work day and night to implement the president’s vision.”
Martelly said the appointment “is a signal to the world that Haiti is really open for business and that Haitians can put their differences behind them to work for the common good and interest of the Haitian people,” according to Reuters.
The news comes just two days after the United Nations Security Council voted to extend its mandate but will cut around 3,000 troops in Haiti. They will be left with around 10,000 troops stationed in the impoverished Caribbean nation.
The Security Council said it made the decision because of the improved political situation since Prime Minister Conille was appointed more than a week ago.
