Judge Limits Guantanamo Deportations; US and Ukraine Sign Minerals Deal | NTD Good Morning (May 1)
A case against the Trump administration alleges that the Department of Homeland Security began using Guantanamo Bay as a transfer point to bypass legal safeguards. However, the Department of Justice is arguing that the executive branch has broad discretion over immigration and foreign affairs.
The United States and Ukraine have signed a new minerals deal, securing American access to critical resources such as lithium and titanium. The deal also includes a co-managed reconstruction fund for the war-torn country. Kyiv says it’s keeping ownership of its resources, with profits going back into Ukraine’s recovery. U.S. President Donald Trump says the agreement will help the United States recover much of the funding it has spent on supporting Ukraine.
The Supreme Court seemed divided on Wednesday on whether or not an Oklahoma Catholic charter school could receive state funding. The state’s charter school board approved the school for funding, claiming it couldn’t stop the school from exercising its religion; however, under Oklahoma state law, a charter school cannot be “affiliated with a religious institution.”
