Videos released from a police officer’s body camera and surveillance camera at a Texas track and field stadium show the moments when police took convicted killer Karmelo Anthony into custody, and the teenager breaking down in tears.
Anthony, 19, was sentenced to 35 years in prison on June 9 for the murder of high school athlete Austin Metcalf, 17. Anthony’s attorneys said they would appeal.
The videos were released by the Collin County court after the trial. Included in the release were four folders of videos as well as files including photos and audio recordings.
In the video from the police officer’s body camera, the officer stopped Anthony on the track.
“Don’t reach for anything, all right, man?” the officer tells Anthony. “Stop right there for me.”
“Everybody can slow down,” the officer tells the dispatcher. “I got the alleged suspect in handcuffs right now, detained.”
The officer then directs the dispatcher to where to send the medical personnel.
At one point in the video, Anthony speaks to the officer.
“He puts his hand on me, I told him not to, he put his hands on me,” a crying Anthony said.
Another video that shows much of the stadium shows a figure in a gray hoodie involved in what appears to be a scuffle in a tented area. Then the hooded figure emerges from the tent in the bleachers, runs down the bleachers, hits the ground, and then runs with several people chasing him.
The hooded figure is then escorted by several figures back inside the track and briefly left alone. Then another figure appears to embrace the hooded figure, who is then walked back to the tent area on the track. The hooded figure walks away from the tent area and is met by other people and then sits down on the track. Eventually, the hooded figure is escorted away by the police.
Metcalf and Anthony got into a dispute on April 2, 2025, at a track and field event in Frisco, Texas. Students from Memorial High found Anthony sitting under the tent designated for their team. Anthony, a member of the Centennial High School team, was asked to leave the tent area.
During the dispute, Anthony took out a folding knife from his bag and stabbed Metcalf in the heart. Metcalf died shortly after in the arms of his twin brother.
The jury, which deliberated for just three hours, could have convicted Anthony of a lesser charge of manslaughter, but instead opted for first-degree murder.
