Reporter Rescues Man From Flooded Car on Live TV

A reporter from ABC13 stopped his live coverage on the severe flood across Houston to helped save a man from his submerged vehicle early April 12.

The reporter, Steve Campion, was at Studemont Street in Houston’s Heights neighborhood at about 7:18 a.m. on Monday when he saw a motorist, identified only as Andy, still inside his vehicle during the hazardous flood water—moments before his car became completely flooded.

According to ABC13, Campion yelled to the man, “Dude, you’ve got to get out of the car. You’ve got to get out!

“Leave the car, swim!” Campion yelled.

Campion then came to the man’s rescue and helped him get to dry land.

The man said he was “O.K.”

Campion asked Andy if he thought the water wasn’t that deep, the man said, “I did not think it was that deep.”

At least two cars were submerged in the same area, but there weren’t people inside, Campion said.

According to statistics, each year in the U.S., there are about 1,200-1,500 submerged vehicle incidents resulting in 400-600 deaths.
