Rubio Warns Panama Over Ties With China; Trump Plans to Meet With Leaders From Canada, Mexico
President Donald Trump has vowed to take back control of the Panama Canal from China, criticizing Chinese influence over the waterway. Meanwhile, Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino, warning of U.S. action if Panama doesn’t curb China’s role. Mulino responded by saying Panama would not renew its Belt and Road Initiative agreement with China. NTD spoke with contributor Mike Leon to get a detailed analysis of the developments.
After announcing tariffs on Canada and Mexico, Trump says he plans to meet with the leaders of the two countries. Trump is defending his tariffs, saying they will remain if nothing is done to curb the flow of illegal immigrants and fentanyl into the United States. In Philadelphia on Friday, a Mexico-bound medical transport plane fell from the sky less than a minute after takeoff, killing all six people on board as it damaged 11 homes while killing one person and injuring 22 people on the ground. At the same time, the National Transportation Safety Board is continuing to investigate a crash between a military helicopter and a passenger jet near Washington, saying that preliminary data showed there was a discrepancy in the altitude readings between the helicopter and the airliner. A District of Columbia official said yesterday that 55 victims of that crash have been identified so far.
