House Fails to Pass Trump-Backed Funding Bill; Georgia Appeals Court Disqualifies Fani Willis

A government shutdown is looming after President-elect Donald Trump’s opposition quashed a funding deal that included a debt limit increase. Republicans and Democrats are now trading blame for the last-minute fiasco of a possible government shutdown while scrambling to secure a new deal before the deadline at midnight on Friday.

A state appeals court has disqualified Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis from the Georgia election case against Trump and other codefendants. This means it will be up to the Prosecuting Attorneys’ Council of Georgia to find another prosecutor to take over the case and decide whether to continue pursuing it.

The United States has confirmed its military has some 2,000 troops in Syria—double the previously reported number. Pentagon press secretary Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder said the additional forces had been in Syria for months “at a minimum.” Ryder added that the troops include conventional and special operations forces. NTD spoke with Michele Rigby Assad, a former CIA intelligence officer, about the current power struggle in Syria.
