President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that he will “reopen and rebuild” the historic Alcatraz prison in San Francisco Bay to jail the nation’s most ruthless and violent repeat offenders. Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi dismissed Trump’s directive, saying Alcatraz is now a popular national park and a major tourist attraction. The facility had previously been a maximum-security federal penitentiary.
Brazilian police say they thwarted a bomb attack at a free concert held by singer Lady Gaga and attended by some 2 million people on Rio de Janeiro’s Copacabana Beach on Saturday. Brazilian authorities say the attack could have been a major disaster. The alleged bomb plot had been planned on the dark web, police said, where they had been monitoring the activity for weeks.
The collection of defaulted federal student loans resumes on Monday after a five-year pause. The federal government says collection can lead to garnishment of state or federal benefits, starting with the garnishment of wages this summer. The Department of Education estimates that about 5 million borrowers have defaulted on their student loans, while another 4 million are at least 90 days behind on payments. Experts suggest that all borrowers visit their loan provider’s website to confirm their status and to update their contact information.
