Trump in Qatar After Meeting Syria’s Leader; Trump Says Direct Talks With China’s Xi Possible | NTD Good Morning (May 14)
President Donald Trump is in Qatar to discuss further U.S. investments. This is after meeting with Syria’s leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday. Trump urged him to normalize ties with long-time rival Israel. This follows yesterday’s announcement that the U.S. would lift all sanctions on Syria. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia committed $600 billion in investments across various U.S. sectors, including AI, defense, and health care. Saudi Arabia is also set to purchase around $140 billion in weapons from the United States.
Trump says he could speak directly with Chinese leader Xi Jinping on the China trade deal if necessary. Meanwhile, the Treasury has sanctioned more than 20 companies tied to Iranian oil shipments to China, which is a part of Trump’s ongoing pressure campaign on Tehran.
The Trump administration has claimed a major legal win after a federal judge in Pennsylvania ruled that Trump can use the Alien Enemies Act to deport some illegal immigrants suspected of gang ties, conflicting with other court decisions. Meanwhile, in Wisconsin, a judge is facing federal charges for helping an illegal immigrant evade arrest. This comes as the Trump administration ramps up immigration enforcement nationwide.
