Senate Advances Rescission Bill With $9 Billion in DOGE Cuts; Trump Unveils $90 Billion AI Investment | NTD Good Morning (July 16)
Senators began a debate on Tuesday night about codifying $9 billion in Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) cuts after facing initial opposition among Republicans. The cuts target around $8 billion in foreign aid and about $1 billion for public broadcasting. In the House, Republicans hit a speed bump on cryptocurrency bills, which failed to pass a rule to even start a debate, with lawmakers citing concerns about the creation of a central bank digital currency. Several of the holdouts met with President Donald Trump on Tuesday before announcing an agreement that would allow them to move forward with the vote on these bills on Wednesday.
Trump visited Pittsburgh on Tuesday, where he announced $90 billion in new investments to make Pennsylvania a leading artificial intelligence hub, vowing to leave China far behind. Chipmaker Nvidia also said the Trump administration has lifted a ban to allow it to sell high-end H20 chips to China, which Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick says is part of U.S.–China negotiations on rare earths. That announcement marked a shift from the recent pause on preventing such chips from being sold to China, drawing questions and criticism from some lawmakers.
Trump says the United States is making fresh headway on trade, securing deals with Vietnam and Indonesia, and launching a sweeping investigation into Brazil’s trade practices. He has also teased more trade agreements ahead. Meanwhile, Trump wrote off renewed interest in the Jeffrey Epstein case, and confirmed U.S. weapons are en route to Ukraine.
