5 Ways to Thrive This Winter

As the days grow short and cold creeps in, we can get lost in a gloomy countdown to spring.

What if we flipped the script? Instead of enduring fall and winter, how might we embrace these seasons as an opportunity to slow down, recharge, and reset our bodies and minds?

1. Get the Best Sleep of Your Life

I’ve always envied bears for hibernating through winter. While we can’t sleep through fall and winter, they are ideal seasons for catching up on some seriously restorative rest.

Summer sleep can be a mess—long days and late sunsets make it challenging to wind down. Late bedtimes can wreak havoc on your health. But once the chill sets in and the nights grow longer, your body’s natural rhythm syncs up with the season.

With early sunsets, melatonin—your body’s sleep hormone—kicks in sooner, helping you fall asleep faster and more deeply. Create a cozy nighttime routine: Dim the lights, ditch the phone (easier said than done), and head to bed earlier.

2. Get Rooted With Seasonal Superfoods

As the world outside slows down and the ground hardens, it’s the perfect time for us to get rooted—literally. Fall and winter bring us back to the earth with nutrient-packed root vegetables like sweet potatoes, carrots, and beets. These humble roots grow deep into the soil, drawing up the vitamins and minerals our bodies crave in the colder months.

Pair these with dark leafy greens like kale and spinach, packed with antioxidants that nourish and energize. Hearty soups, stews, and slow-cooked meals provide comfort and warmth. Toss in immune-boosting ingredients like garlic, ginger, or turmeric, and you’ll have a recipe for staying rooted in health all winter.

3. Find Your Mental Health Reset Button

Shorter days can influence your mood—seasonal affective disorder is not uncommon. Instead of resisting the change, lean into the season’s slower pace. Fall and winter are perfect for reflection, rest, and recharging.

Use this time to start a gratitude journal, meditate, or dive into a good book—whatever helps you slow down and mentally reset.

4. Embrace Movement

Staying active in winter is key to keeping your energy and mood steady. You don’t need to be out running marathons in the snow—unless that’s your thing. A brisk walk outside can do wonders for your circulation and metabolism. Think of it as a natural cold plunge in the brisk winter air.

Why not embrace the season by taking up a new winter sport? Winter offers plenty of ways to move outdoors, whether walking, ice skating, or skiing.

5. Appreciate the Sun

They say absence makes the heart grow fonder, which couldn’t be more true for the sun during winter. With fewer daylight hours, it’s easy to miss getting out into it, particularly if you work during the day.

Try catching the sunrise or sunset—a simple, beautiful way to lift your spirits. Even brief sun exposure boosts mood, energy, and helps regulate sleep. Take a short walk when the sun’s out, even if it’s cold or cloudy, or sit by a window to soak up the light.
