Metabolic syndrome, also called insulin resistance syndrome, is a group of conditions that increase the risk of coronary heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and other serious health problems. One may have metabolic syndrome if one has three or more of the following conditions: - A large waistline - High blood pressure - High blood sugar levels - High blood triglycerides - Low HDL cholesterol A heart-healthy lifestyle is crucial in treating and preventing metabolic syndrome. If making lifestyle changes is not enough, one may need to take medicines to lower cholesterol or blood pressure.
