USDA Issues Public Health Alert for Costco-Sold Ravioli Over Shellfish Allergens

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is issuing a public health alert on Costco-sold ravioli because of misbranding and undeclared shellfish allergens, according to a notice published on May 4.

A recall wasn’t requested by the agency’s Food Safety and Inspection Service “because the product is no longer available for purchase,” the agency said, adding that it is issuing the alert because some consumers may still have the product and “to ensure that consumers with shellfish allergies are aware that this product should not be consumed.”

According to the notice, the ravioli pasta products were made between March 10, 2026, and April 21, 2026, including bag packages with the text, “Giovanni Rana RANA Rustic Beef Sauce & Creamy Burrata Cheese Ravioli” and “use by” dates that range from “05/14/2026 to 06/25/2026.”

The products, which have “Est. 44870” inside the USDA mark of inspection, were sent to Costco retail stores in Maryland and New Jersey, said the USDA.

“The ravioli labeled as beef and burrata may actually contain shrimp filling in lobster sauce,” the agency said. “The shrimp and lobster, known allergens (shellfish), are not declared on the product label.”

Costco said in a notice on its website that the product was recalled by the manufacturer, Rana Meal Solutions.

“We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and ask you to please pass this letter along to anyone to whom this item may have been given,” Rana said in a statement.

The USDA said the company has not received any reports of adverse health events in connection with the products. It advises consumers who may have concerns to contact a health care provider.

The product may still be in consumers’ refrigerators or freezers, it said, which prompted the USDA health alert. People are urged not to consume the products, and that they should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase, the agency added.

The establishment told the USDA’s inspection service that they had received two consumer complaints that the beef sauce and ravioli contained shrimp ravioli, according to the notice.

An article published in the National Library of Medicine in 2020 says that shellfish allergies are among “the most common food allergies causing anaphylaxis in adults and children” in the world. In the United States, it is the most common food allergy in adults and the third-most common in children, it says.

Symptoms of an allergic reaction to shellfish—which include shrimp, lobster, crab, oysters, and other crustaceans—can include itchy or irritated skin; congestion; swelling of the tongue, face, lips, or throat as well as other parts of the body; coughing or choking; abdominal pain; nausea; diarrhea; vomiting; fainting; and dizziness, according to the Mayo Clinic.

A more severe reaction, or anaphylaxis, is considered a medical emergency, the clinic says. Symptoms can include shock with a severe loss in blood pressure or a rapid, weak pulse; a skin rash, hives, itching, or swelling; coughing, choking, or wheezing with breathing problems; a swollen throat or tongue, or a tightness in the throat that may make it difficult to breathe; diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting; and dizziness or fainting.

USDA officials said that anyone with comments or concerns about the product can contact Rana Meal Solutions or submit questions via the USDA’s website.
