A supplement company this week said it is expanding a recall of moringa, a plant-based supplement, due to possible Salmonella contamination, according to a notice published by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on June 3.
New York-based Total Nutrition Inc. expanded its recall of TNVitamins and Doctor’s Pride Ultra Potent Complete Green Superfood Moringa Capsules, which are sold through major retailers such as Walmart, Amazon, Target, and TikTok Shop, among others.
Moringa, a plant native to northern India, has been branded a “superfood” and is traditionally used for medicinal purposes.
The company initiated the recall after the FDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notified the company that the moringa products “may be implicated in an ongoing investigation associated with moringa-containing dietary supplement products.”
“Total Nutrition Inc. has ceased distribution and sale of the identified product and has initiated removal orders across all applicable sales and fulfillment channels while the FDA, CDC, and the company continue their investigation,” the notice said.
Total Nutrition Inc. said in the notice that it is including a new lot of TNVitamins Ultra Potent Complete Green Superfood Moringa in 10,000-milligram doses and Doctor’s Pride Complete Green Superfood Ultra Potent Moringa in 10,000-milligram doses in an ongoing recall.
It added that no other TNVitamins or Doctor’s Pride products are included in the recall.
People who purchased the affected products are advised to dispose of them and not to consume, sell, or serve the products. They can request a refund through the company’s website.
A report published by the CDC on May 27 said that 119 Salmonella cases are associated with recalled moringa products made by Total Nutrition Inc. and two other supplement companies: Live it Up Super Greens and Why Not Natural. So far, 32 people have been hospitalized across 36 states, it said
Separately, the CDC said last month that another brand of moringa made by Mogo was linked to an ongoing Salmonella outbreak that included 18 cases and seven hospitalizations across 14 states.
Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause serious infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with compromised immune systems, health officials say. Symptoms can include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and fever.
